The band at my church record the worship services with the intent of giving the copies to shut-ins who can't attend. If we were to open this up to everyone in the church what are the legal ramifications? Could we accept a free-will offering to cover the cost of the actual media (CD)? Would the original artist info need to be listed on the disk? Need some serious advice.

Hey James,
Function of 2 things:
1> whether the content of the CD that you are recording is copyrighted, if it is you can seek permission from the organization that holds the copyright and buy rights and make it legal. Otherwise it's illegal buddy to give away others copyrighted content. Some people give distribution rights only for a credit on the product being distributed so it's not always about money.
2> If not copyrighted then like good people as most of us are, give credit to the artist or the original proprietor, and in case you make money by distributing it share the profits as well. Am sure you would never want to be on the other side of fence.

so brother, have fun... share and do it absolutely the way it's expected to be done not just by law also by our morality expectations from each other.

Include all the artist info in PRINT, and make sure the Songs are not copyrighted, and you're defiantly okay. if there are copyrights, check with the music distributor and get permission, otherwise it is technically illegal, but rarely enforced, and you could do it without trouble. If you are keeping it in a limited market to members of the congregation, you're okay. if you do it free and credit, that's probalby fine too. But things get messy when you start charging.

I agree with the first answer, credit should be given. On your answer though, as long as noone is profiting, it is legal. Once somebody make a dime from it, it becomes illegal.
No worries for you, but do give credit.
