You can use Fn + F8 to increase brightness. I think there is no fix to that problem as all models of HP laptops seem to display similar behaviour, a minor annoyance though

Hmmm... That's strange. My HP Laptop screen goes dim when I unplug it. Anyhow, try checking out the energy saving properties of your laptop. Something may be set to save battery energy.

Most Laptops have a function key "FN". This key plus with a another key can increase the screen brightness. For further details try:

there should be an "fn" button on the lower left side of your keyboard, you hold that button down, and press f8 which should have something like a sun with an arrow pointing up beside it.

Its normal. Some laptop saves its battery when you unplugged the battery cord. It will allows you to use that stuff longer.
