Im building my first Pc and wonder if I can try overclocking for better performance.I dont play games, but want to play with CAD/CAM rendering etc.I have a very good CPU cooler too. What I want to know is,If I buy a less expensive CPU to experiment and I smoke the thing,Will it destroy anything else?It would be cool to play around with.Otherwise,I will just start with a faster CPU to begin with and leave it be.What do I have to lose? Thanks

Well now that the overclocking doubters have said their piece, let me give you some different info. You can buy a 1.8Ghz Core 2 Duo E4300 for about $175, and overclock it to run faster than the 2.93Ghz Core 2 Extreme, which retails for about $1000. I don't know about you, but that seems like a worthwhile exercise to me. It should not ruin anything else, but a good overclocker will not usually smoke the chip, you monitor temps to make sure that doesn't happen. Even if the chip is damaged, if you have been monitoring correctly the worst that can happen is that the chip will break, nothing else though. Good and safe overclocking, emphasis on good and safe, is a complex task, so I recommend you research thouroughly. I would be more than happy to help you, feel free to give me an email or instant message.

Overclocking is a thing of the past! It was used by early PC enthusiasts to speed up their slow processor to keep up with the newer software. There is absolutely NO reason to overclock a new processor today! So you want to overclock your 3 ghz processor to gain 20mhz! You wouldnt see a difference in the first place! If you want software to run better, its more feasible to buy more ram! Show me a piece of software that requires those kinds of speeds to begin with MISFITMAN!

Overclocking is valid but risky to do; unlikely to smoke the thing; but do it in small increments, all that can possibbly happen with a good cooler to begin with is a system lock up.
