I was teased a bunch. For what clothes I wore, for the friends I had, for actually trying in school, for who knows what. Most of that was middle school though. In high school, no one really cared. Middle school was pretty bad though. It was all that crap that made me so withdrawn from people. It still has some effect one me, even now that I'm in college.

My experience as a kid is that I can pinpoint 3 instances when I was bullied. On 2 of them, I physically responded, taking the bully to the ground with a wrestling-like move, and they never bothered me again. The other, I just ignored and they went away. As a middle school principal, however, I realize it is not always that simple. I believe bullies bully for attention from peers, or because they are afraid of someone or something, or because they have a warped sense of humor. Most bullies I have found, have been bullied themselves, either at home or at school. Some responses can be to 1) Ignore; 2) Laugh and walk away, "Ha! You're really funny!" 3) Minimize - "Wow, you noticed the dirt on my shirt. I'm so glad you care about how I look." 4) Dumbfound -"Oh yeah, what's your name again...?" 5) Physical - if assaulted, and you have some skill, you can defend yourself without truly fighting (grab and slightly twist an arm, hand-lock, bend thumb, leverage to ground, etc. without becoming violent). Bullies usually do their deeds only when they have an audience (usually other "followers" who are the bully's "buddies.") If you stay away from the bully when he or she is around his or her audience, they're less likely to do anything as opposed to when you encounter them alone. Tell a trusted teacher or other school official what's going on. Hang out with friends. Ask your principal about getting a program or assembly that addresses bullying. Best wishes. Hang in there, and realize that bullies are really very sad or angry people that do not know how to get positive attention, and that are afraid of something (loss of friends; loss of power; etc.)

Being the only person from my elementary school to go to the middle school I currently attend, no one understood me. No one came up to me, and they made weird rumors about me. For about 4 months, I have received death glares from 40 girls in my class (I go to a girl’s middle school). I have been beaten by older students (I still have scars on my wrist and shoulder.) When I finally started making friends, two of the girls in my class started getting on my nerves. We’re all twelve or thirteen, but they pretend like they’re much older – drink, smoke, you name it. They started hating me, because I say no to whatever they say. Once, I refused to say sorry for something I didn’t even do and they threatened to beat me up. They actually managed to hit me in the head a couple of times.
After nine months of being their victim, I finally told my homeroom teacher, who in turn told the school’s judicial system. One of them has been ordered to transfer schools, and the other still attends. They don’t bother me anymore. ^-^
