Keep in mind that 17" is really hard to lug around - if you plan on bringing it to your classrooms. etc. I used to sell computers.

If you're a student, the typical size for college, etc is 14" because they're easy to bring with you.

17" is a hefty computer but great screen.... I like the Dell 1701...spend your money wisely.... you can always get software down the road. If you can swing it - go for a dual-core chip, a gig of ram and a decent video card. The monitor should be the highest you can afford.

I also have purchased 3 computers off e-bay that are marvelous and do everything I want..... important thing there is to talk to the person selling - make sure you communicate with them. Call them - you can find a lot out about their personalities and honesty from the phone call.

One I bought from a guy who worked at microsoft, another was a master's degree student (computers) who just got an awesome job and a new computer was given to her.

Just don't buy anything with an 'economy' chip - like a Celeron....and in college, accident insurance is a good idea.

Without much money = no ibook. I would go with an HP laptop or Dell. Just be sure to purchase a common laptop so in case it breaks its easy to get a replacement part (no offbrands).

check: www.dealsofamerica.com for the latest online deals in laptops. Occationally (maybe once a month) I see a nice laptop for around $400-500.

HP makes a 8430 that is a very good system. Whatever you get, I strongly suggest it has a core2duo processor. There are coreduo processors - make sure it is a core 2 duo....
