they say to turn off the heating lamp at night. where i'm located it gets pretty cold, so would i need a heating pad? if so, where should i place it below the substrate or on top?

If you can't maintain a nighttime temperature of 70-75 degrees without the heat lamp, you should use a heating pad. It's best outside the tank, so that it is under about 1/2 of the tank bottom. This way, if it's too warm, the gecko still has a "cooler" side of the tank (and if it's too cool, he can go back where it's warmer). He'll find the temperature where he's most comfortable. Keeping the pad outside the tank protects it from water (misting for humidity) and curious little claws if he decides to dig!

if you have carpet then put it in the top because it will burn onto the carpet
