The main topic before the war was about the right of a state joining the Union to choose whether they'd be a free state or a slave state. The congressional representatives of the northern states said they could not be slave states, but the South said they could. There were a couple attempts at compromises, but ultimately the southern states seceded from the Union. The newly elected President, under the premise that a house divided cannot stand, vowed to repair the splintered nation. When the Federal army refused to leave Fort Sumter, the cadets of the Citadel fired their cannons on the U.S.

In short, the debate over states' rights caused the division, but the South's firing on Fort Sumter started the war.

The war between the north and the south was over economic competion. The south wanted to separate from the union and to compete with the north utilizing the free labor of exploited slaves.

State's rights

Several issues were involved, slavery and states rights. The south felt that they were getting the shaft by the north based on economics. The south was not getting a fair shake in the business world. Although slavery was an issue, it was not the main issue.

The North with it's less robust trade and disadvantaged legislative strength (due to inflated southern representation due to fractional slave population) feared southern expansion of slavery into the northern factory economy and subsequent job loss.

The south feared the North's abolition of slavery and assistance to runaway slaves.

They were fighting to preserve their own regional economic strength and lifestyle.

More precisely, it was about states' rights. Did states have the right to decide whether or not they individually could decide on whether to accept or reject slavery.

It became about slavery with the Emancipation Proclamation, but that wasn't the original cause.
