Your little Caddy is computer controlled. It has TWO temperature sensors in it. One is for the dash instrument gauge. The other is for the computer only.
there is no means for you to know definitively if the engine is overheating or not.
You need some pretty expensive equipment to be able to tell for sure.
You need a digital volt/ohm meter to test the sensors. You need an infrared thermometer to test the engine's ACTUAL temperature. You need a scanner to read the computer's LIVE DATA stream to know what the computer "sees".
Without this equipment, you are reduced to trial and error repair, otherwise known as "shootin' a shotgun into the dark, from the hip" diagnosis.
If you want to attempt repairs, replace both sensors, and clean out the coolant passages around them when you do.
If you want it repaired, and dependable again, seek the professional repair, preferably an ASE shop.

Check your antifreeze level you might be low on fluid. If not, your water pump might be going out (not circulating the antifreeze through the engine) and need replaced.

It may be your thermostat is stuck open. If you have antifreeze in the car or it is full and OK, try replacing the thermostat first as this is the least expensive, but important.

If this doesn't help your radiator might have a clog and is preventing the flow of antifreeze. If you can't get a handle on it, you will have to take it to the mechanic because over time it will get worse.

Hope this helps.

Bad sensor call those lights dummy lights because usually by the time they go off the damage is done try a peice of eletric tape over that light if you know all things are good.

there is a problem with your thermostat.

you can take it to a mechanic and they can plug in a computer to it. most mechanics wont charge you for the diagnostic.

make sure you ask if it is free.

hope this helps..
