I grew up believing that the role of the US was to be an example to the world that people of different races, religions and political beliefs could live together and disagree, but still accept each other. At least that is what I was taught as a boy. It has been difficult to hold on to that belief over the years, but the US is still here and still the most prosperous country on earth. I still believe that our primary role in the world should be to be an example to the world that differences in humanity are an asset and not a detriment.

Like George Washinton, I respect an almost isolationist view. Everybody hates us anyway, so why should we even bother? I think we should restrict almost all of our involvement to trade. I think diplomacy has a huge role in things like negotiating trade agreements, extradition treaties and the like. We can offer asylum to the oppressed but we shouldn't be in the business of overthrowing regimes unless they are a threat.

A great example is the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Deep in my heart I wish all of them well, but their political fate does not directly have an impact on me. It is much more in their self-interest than ours to work-out their problems. Furthermore, American involvement in their conflict has yielded almost nothing. It can be argued that they would be further along the peace process without our involvement. Moreover, our involvement in their peace process takes-up a disproportionate amount of our government's time and resources to any benefit we may hope to accrue.

The United States should help broker peace and spread democracy by non-aggressive means. If force is needed, the US should strike hard and fast.

As a superpower, the US has the moral obligation to provide a deterrent to overt aggression everywhere. However, the US cannot reasonably act as a bully either. There's a delicate balance that needs to be struck between peace-keeper, benefactor and world leader.

We need to take care of the USA, and the USA alone. Instead of sending aid to anyone, use the money to start paying off our debts held by foreign countries. Let them take care of their own back yards. If anything is detrimental to the security of the US, meet it head on and destroy it with a vengence. No mercy for no one.

We should lead the world by example, not cram democracy down it's throat. If the Republicans had won the last election we would be the new Nazis.

The US should be the model of freedom and justice like it used to be and was meant to be. Instead of taking sides, meddling in other people business, and full of corruption and hypocrisy.
