Both would be 17 at the time with valid drivers lisence. We are going to put money into the car to make sure it's safe to drive. *Car inspected & anything needing to be fixed will be taken care of. * Would it be okay for two responsible teenagers to drive cross country?

Don't see why not. I'm sure you'll have the times of your life. Do it now! May be the last chance for a loooong time if you know what I mean. (Wife, kids, job, etc.).
You might want to check your local AAA to see if you can get temporary membership. They can provide valuable service when needed. Even if you don't want any services from them, before you go talk to them anyway. They will still have good info for you.
You guys be safe and make the most of it. Somehow record your journey. You'll not regret it. Bring lots of souveniers home. Talk to the locals in small towns. (Be sure to stop in small towns. Might be surprised at what you find, and stories you'll hear). Make friends.

hopefully you are both male. Regardless of the opinions offered here I would still check with the law enforcement agencies of every state that you plan to drive through and adjust the route as needed

ROAD TRIP! Yes, I have done this before (but didn't go to Cali). As long as the driver is 16 (+) with a licence then it's no prob. =)
