A soft-lead pencil is usually marked #1 on the pencil.

A hard-lead pencil is usually marked #3 on the pencil.

The difference is how hard the lead of the pencil is. #1's are very soft, #2's are medium (the common type) and #3's are hard.

Check the printing on the side of the pencil - you'll find the # there.

Soft lead makes a darker line because its softer so hunk come off easier. Soft lead is the opposite

A harder graphite (no pencils contain lead anymore due to the cancer shmancer ****) any way... is going to apply less graphite to the paper whereas the softer graphite is going to apply more graphite to the paper.

addition: the softer the pencil the more graphite it is going to apply thus the darker the stroke will be. A harder pencil will have a lighter stroke. I prefer a 2b my self.

The softer the lead such as 1B or 2B, the darker the stroke mark.
