My boyfriend is Puerto Rican and I'm finding more and more of my family and friends are saying negative things about him, just because of his background. He's sweet, smart (just about to graduate law school), and treats me better than anyone ever has. My family is Italian and I sometimes think it stems from that. But, there is no excuse for my friends to be this way! I wish they would just be happy for me and except him the way that his family excepts me. Just want to hear everyones thoughts on this.

My husband is from honduras and i went through the same thing you are... i must have heard my dad say **** about 1000 times,,, ya know if you guys last and stay together your friends and family will except it., and if they don't then you have to decide what is more important. i love my husband more than anything, and he is the only person that has ever been there for me, and if it came down to it i would choose him over anyone... the sad thing is people sterotype and they make rude ignorant comments, thats life,.. the thing that bothers me is im white, born and raised usa , but all of my friends are from russia, honduras, belize, vietnam, you name it, and i hear more sterotyping from my white friends than from anyone else,,, sorry to bash my own race but its true, it is so influenced in this country to hate the spics, hate the chinks, that so many people do now,, i wish everyone would realize that racism is a result of your own stupidity... you stay with your puerto rican and screw what everyone else says...

In all fairness, you shouldn't feel negative toward any types of people. Everybody should be looked at as an individual.
Getting to your question, I think that a lot of Americans resent seeing signs in Spanish, instructions in Spanish, and other instructions is Spanish. There has been an effort on the part of government to discourage people from assimilating.
In this country, you can speak any language that you want. But people are tired of seeing signs of catering to people who have no desire to assimilate. Puerto Ricans are not immigrants. They are American citizens, but if they want to come here from Puerto Rico, they should be making an attempt to learn English. If I decided to move to Puerto Rico, I would be learning English.
My resentment is toward the politicians who encourage the divisiveness. We have a common language in this country, and it's English.

I have nothing against them. My father's uncle married a puerto rican, and had some children with her. So even though I'm not puerto rican myself, I do have some reletives that are. If I were to have negative thoughts or feelings against them, then I would be hurting my own family.

They just jealous that's all. Racism is always born from self loathing and insecurities. For example, one may say Puerto Ricans make fantastic short-stops, point-guards, and infantry men. Where would the MLB, NBA, and USMC be without them?

im black and i love the puerto rican culture. i love their traditon, the music, the food, everything. dont worry what other people have to say becuz in the end u have to follow ur heart. and only you can make yourself happy, he sounds like decent guy and it hard to find on eof those in this day and age so girl do what you do best!! hope this help and GOOD LUCK!!!
