i need to know for a history thing, about this....it was when Spain thought the PNW belonged to them, but why did the US think they had claim on PNW???

Because of a political ideaology called Manifest Destiny. Basically, Americans back "in the day" believed that it was the rightful and obvious destiny of the United States to encompass the continent from Atlantic to Pacific.

And actually, the dispute over the Oregon Territory didn't really involve Spain. It was more between the US and Britain. Spain and Russia had both had claims on Oregon previously, but had relinquished their claims to Britain and the US in a couple of treaties.

The concept of Manifest Destiny. Since it was contiguously part of the mainland, the US therefore was entitled to take it as their own
