You can find cheap property in just about any state, if you don't mind living out in the sticks. Smaller towns tend to have lower property values, crime, etc...And are usually good communities to raise your family.

Right now, Louisiana is pretty cheap. As for a good place to raise a family, don't think so. That state is the most corrupt and screwed up one I have ever had the displeasure of visiting.

Kansas can be both cheap and good place to raise a family. The ruralness can be more than big city people can handle though.

You can get a acre of land here for $1,000 in many areas.

You can purchase livable homes for less than $30,000.

You may have to trade city conveniences if you want to live cheaply but you can't beat the real estate taxes in smaller rural areas and the crime rate is lower too. I live in the Ozarks (Southwest Missouri) and the quality of life here is unbeatable.

If you want both, check out Idaho. The smaller the city or town, the better.
