This is the text book way of doing it.

7 and 1/3 is actually 22/3 (multiply the denominator of the mixed fraction with the whole number and add the numerator of the mixed fraction to it)

3 and 2/3 is actually 11/3

So yoou are essentially adding

22/3+11/3

This is 33/3 which gives you 11.

Add the fractions together first: 1/3 + 2/3 = 3/3 which is 1 whole. Then, add the whole numbers: 7 + 3 = 10. Then, add it all together: 1 + 10 = 11.
