In the sentence, "The mountain home has been closed for the winter.", would the word "mountain" be an adjective because it's describing the house or would it be a noun since a mountain is a thing.

It would be an adjective since it is placed before home (the noun) to provide a description specifically as it relates to the location of the home...therefore it is decriptive in nature

Adjective; it's describing the home. My way of remembering the rule is thinking about carrot cake: if 'carrot' was referring to the vegetable, it would be a noun, but since it's the flavor of cake, it's an adjective.

Adjective, it describes a noun. You could say a desert home, desert being a place but in this instance an adjective.
