You use the adding machine (the number pad on the right, thats seperate from the rest of the keyboard). ALT and 3 make the heart ♥ Make sure you don't press it more than once, lift up and push again for more hearts, or else it will make other symbols....you can use the whole adding machine for symbols tho....

in microsoft u can use "symbol" option. it's the best for solution.
