A cover letter is the best way to "freestyle" your skills. It should be interesting to read, polite, professional, and grab the readers attention right away. If the job is going to be something you're passionate about and really want to do - then communicate that. If it isn't, I would first ask yourself if this is a career or job you really want.

As an example:

Dear Company XYZ:

I have long had a passion for railroading and transportation. I recently discovered an open position for a transportation logistics coordinator. I find it really interesting how cargo containers can be effortlessly and efficiently transported anywhere on Earth using a variety of methods. I have a Masters degree,,,,,,,,,,,,

Blah blah blah....

The first few lines should always state the position you are applying for and set a tone for professionalism. If you need further help, feel free to email the first portion to Hines dot brad at gmail dot com. (< No Spam!) and I'll give it a whirl.
