I'm trying to upload a resume but apparently it's the wrong file type.

You need to know what file type is expected. For example, if your resume is a Word doc and the site is expecting a text file, then in Word you could go to File -> Save As and select Text Only. This will save the file with a .txt file extension instead of .doc. You should then open the .txt file and adjust the layout because you will lose things like bullet points and fonts when you do this. On the other hand, if your resume is a text file, you could open it in Word and use the same method as above to save it as a Word document. You can then edit the format as you please. There are many variations on this depending on your word processor and what the site is expecting.

If you are using MS Word, open the resume, click Save As, and you will see a drop down window with different file types under the name of your file. However if your resume has fancy formatting, it might not save properly, meaning it won't look as nice. You could also simply open the resume document, copy it, and paste it into another application such as Notepad. Chow.
