The fuse probably blew because the electric element disintegrated and upon doing so shorted momentarly blowing the fuse.

There are two elements in the average water heater. What probably happened one blew a long time ago and you still had the 2nd one to heat the water so you didnt quite notice it. Now the last one has blown and you have no heat in the tank

You can go to Lowes or Menards or Home Depot and buy those water heater elements. The wattage is stamped right on the visible surface which you can read while they are still in the water heater proper. They either screw out with a pipewrench or have two mount bolts with a rubber gasket. That have a "hump" type cover that needs to be removed to view them. Look for them on the SIDE of the water heater One will be low and the other will be high. They cost about $18 each . Easy to install by an average handy man.

If you indeed have FUSES, instead of a breaker for the control of the electricity, then there should be two fuses, as electric water heaters work on 220 volts, which requires two fuses or one large double breaker. The fuses should be at least 30 amp. size as should the double breaker. Inside the top cover of the water heater there is a large thermostat with, usually, a red button in the middle of the top area, just below where the electric wires connect to the screws. If you have a voltage tester, touch the prods to the two screws to see if you have 220 volts. If so, push the red button in and if it snaps then it was blown also. If nothing I've described works to get it going then you'll need to check the elements and maybe replace one or both.

there may be 2 fuses for the heater, re-check that. also if the heater has/had been off awhile it will be about 30-60 minutes for it to reach temperature again.

you may also want to remove the upper panel on the water heater (it should be on the side, same place where you adjust temp at) take that cover off and you should see a red button about the size of a dime, (it will be recessed, I usually use a screwdriver) press that, it is the water heaters internal reset switch.

hope this helps.

GFCI recepticles will not reset if there is no power to them. You either have a bad fuse, or there is another one that has blown. Make sure you have screwed the new fuse in nice and tight. Sometimes they don't make contact. Best to check for power with a meter. If you aren't comfortable with doing this, call in an electrician or a friend who knows what to look for.

It sounds like you heater's electric element got burned out. Get an electrician to check the continuity of the element before you have it removed and replaced.

Good luck
