Several countries had just fought for between four to six years against Nazism, fascism, and dictatorships in Italy, Spain, Germany, and Japan. If the UN had not been formed (they feared) the world of Europe would soon collapse into similar systems of government. Therefore following World War I we had the League of Nations to insure peace and arbitrate countries differences, and after World War II we had the United Nations to attempt to do the same. basically to keep the peace won in WW II.

First of all, there was the League of Nations created after WWI, primarily because Woodrow Wilson of the USA wanted it badly to maintain collective security (every nation in the world using their collective force against an aggressor nation).

However, the Senate did not approve membership into the League, so USA was out of it. The rest of the European superpowers didn't give a damn. Thus, it failed, and let Italy, Japan and Germany conquer other countries.

It failed also, because WWII started just after 19 years!!

Anyways, the Big Three (Stalin, Roosevelt, Churchill) decide that yes, we do need an international governing body that is effective.

So, United Nations was set up in San Fran after WWII. The biggest irony of it all was that it was set up in such a way that it favors the victors of WWII. For example, the 5 victors (USA, France, UK, China, USSR) put themselves in the Security Council as permanent members.

Secondly, they gave themselves veto powers. If one vetos, the motion is cancelled. Thus, the little nations in the General Assembly can't do anything 'cause most of the time, it never leaves the UN. REJECTION!!

So, in short, the UN is the fancier way for individuals from all the world to gather and sit around in suits and talk all day and get no work done, because the UN is controlled by the superpowers of the world.

The WW2 was so devastating compared to WW1 that the victors, the allied forces, wanted to make sure this would be the "War to end all wars".

The formation of the UN was designed to keep all channels of communications open to all the world's nations so as to allow for The airing of differences, grievances, concerns, fear, to allow member nations to take actions to protect each nation and people within them.

Also, the security council was designed to insure that major nations would play a huge roll in what happened to the rest of the world.

All member nations, including those nations which were defeated were represented and were seated in the first UN, which was originally located in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, NY, the home of the 1960 World's Fair.
