For me, it's James Agee's "A Death In The Family". Every single word in that book is poetry...and metaphorically those words mirrored my life.
Feel free to make a list! If I had to choose a second and third I'd go with "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee & "Call It Sleep" by Henry Roth. "Breakfast of Champions" (Kurt Vonnegut) and "The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" (the late, great Douglas Adams) are the best satires; "The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter", "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn", "The House On Mango Street", and "The Catcher In The Rye" are my favorites for stories involving children, etc.

Performing Flea, letters by British humorist P.G. Wodehouse to his old school pal, Bill Townend, although this is occasionally eclipsed by Over Seventy, a later memoir. They are quietly hysterically funny and utterly timeless just as Jeeves and Wooster will never lose their tarnish. Wodehouse burbles. He inspires. He spreads sweetness and light among all who have the good fortune to find him on the shelf.
Consider these Wodehouse excerpts at the Roll & Shuffle under Impossible Odds: http://pokerpulse.com/news/viewtopic.php?p=2697#2697.
Perfect. Utterly perfect. Hillaire Belloc said so, too.

There are so many possibilities, but if I had to pick one, I would pick The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. I first read it when I was about 9/10 and I am now in my 30's. It really meant a lot to me as a kid - after all, what kid wouldn't like the idea of stepping into their closet and out into another world? It introduced me to a world of fantasy and magic where animals talk and good triumphs over evil. Even now when I read it I'm taken back to my childhood, and life is good and simple once more.

"The Once and Future King" by T.H. White because it teaches you about life with one of the most fantastical myths of all time. King Arthur and Merlin.
"The Screwtape Letters" by C.S. Lewis because it makes you think about your ways when a demon discusses with another demon his attempts on how to influence you and gain your soul.

Out of Africa, The Little Prince, Pride and Prejudice, in that order. These are life-changing books that make you think, and think, and think: about life, values, relationships.
