I can't figure out why doctors still insist on saying you shouldn't feed a baby solids until they are six months old. Does that make any sense? I know, I know... there are reasons related to food allergies and such that are great indicaters that feeding them solids right off isn't a good idea. But shouldn't the decision about when to start them on baby cereal be based on their weight rather than their age?

The baby book I used for all three of my children made a very strong argument for this... saying.. when the baby reaches 12-14 lbs, their bodies will need more sustenance than breastmilk or formula can provide alone... The result of withholding solids at this point is the babies will stop sleeping through the night, will eat more formula than they can hold and will then throw up because they're too full of liquid... and on and on in a vicious cycle of hunger and sleeplessness.. The solution? Just add a little bit of cereal to their night time routine... in the bottle or sucked off a spoon. At that point, you can wait several months to start introducing other solids.

And you're right.. all babies are different. Get a good book on babies. You'll use it for years..

Hi D L

My last baby was lifting his head from the time he was born, but was you say, all babies are different.

If you're breast feeding, keep doing that exclusively until your little one is six months of age. Solids should not be started any sooner, as the likelihood of inducing a lactose, egg or grain allergy is a risk. At six months, the babies stores of iron are beginning to run down, so that's why solids are also introudced then. You DO NOT need to give them an iron supplement.

As for 'baby juice' what is that? My babies had freshly squeezed orange juice (squeezed by my own fair hands!), and diluted half and half with boiled water to make sure they tolerated it well. They loved it - and mandarine juice even more! Fresh is always best because the vitamins, minerals and enzymes haven't been destoyed by the heating in bottling and canning.

When it came to foods, I gave my children what we ate and just made it into a very soft and liquid paste at first and went from there. As they handled the textures, I stopped making it so liquid until they began to handle tiny lumps etc. Of course with highly spiced food, I took there portion out beforehand so they didn't get an upset tummy. You can freeze portions in ice cube trays and then bag them up for future use.

Feed your baby only health giving foods - packet chips, candy, sweets, bottled juices, sweetened milk drinks, soda etc cannot build health and muscle in a child (or an adult for that matter). Unfortunately most doctors are not trained in nutrition - not their fault - so you will have to become informed yourself. It's a really interesting journey. Enjoy your adventure! :)

my son started holding his head up and reaching for things at 3 months...he was a premature baby (one month early) ..
he is 5 months old now and having baby food.. the milk would not fill him up..i even bought a stronger formula and would not do it.. I did do all this with permission of a doctor.
I havent introduced juice yet ...and i wouldnt until he gets a little bit older.

It varies. a baby can hold its head up anytime in the first 8 or 10 weeks. they say now not to give a baby any solid baby food, even stage one until at least 6 months of age. baby juice should be avoided for a long time otherwise they will prefer it to milk. You may end up with a baby who wont drink anything but juice

My son started to hold his head up about 2 months. He also started to reach for things about the same time. I started feeding him solid foods about 4 months. The same with the juice. Some people say that girls mature faster than boys but that is not true. When the baby is ready to do all of this he/she will.

Food shouldn't be started until 6 months, and there is no need to use baby food:

Health experts and breastfeeding experts agree that it's best to wait until your baby is around six months old before offering solid foods. There has been a large amount of research on this in the recent past, and most health organizations have updated their recommendations to agree with current research. Unfortunately, many health care providers are not up to date in what they're telling parents, and many, many books are not up to date.

The following organizations recommend that all babies be exclusively breastfed (no cereal, juice or any other foods) for the first 6 months of life (not the first 4-6 months):

World Health Organization
UNICEF
US Department of Health & Human Services
American Academy of Pediatrics
American Academy of Family Physicians
American Dietetic Association
Australian National Health and Medical Research Council
Royal Australian College of General Practitioners
Health Canada
Most babies will become developmentally and physiologically ready to eat solids by 6-9 months of age. For some babies, delaying solids longer than six months can be a good thing; for example, some doctors may recommend delaying solids for 12 months if there is a family history of allergies.

You can start juice at 6 months as well, but personally I think it is best to only offer water.

around 3 months they can hold up their head pretty good, but they can't really sit unassited until 6 months, which is the same time you should begin foods and juices.

BABY LETS EAT is a great baby food cookbook for all the stages of your baby's eating and is written by a nutritionist and dr. I forget their names, it's been awhile for me. Anyway, it is educational as well as tasty homemade, good food for baby.

The best thing to do is play with your baby. Show him things and see how he reacts to them.
Black and white are good for the eyes.

DO NOT give a baby under 1 peanut butter...it will send them to the hospital dehydrated. I sent my grandbaby there twice before we found out what was causing it.

For the food get a book or read on line.
