The NFL only pays $162 a month to retired players according to Mike Ditka. (ON YAHOOS SPORT PAGE RIGHT NOW) Yet it takes in over 800 million dollars a year in revenue, every year and uses the retired players highlights to make even more money but pays those players nothing extra.
Does anyone think this is right to use then discard the heros of the NFL?
I know most people wont care but man the people running the NFL are crooks..what do you think? Go read the Yahoo article and it will make you think about how greedy the people who run the NFL are/

Someone said they should have invested their money better..well they didn't get the million dollar contracts 15 years ago like they do today, the retired heros of the sport are forgotten and it's just a shame the owners are getting richer every day off of their hard work. Some of these guys were crippled, had bones broken to earn the money for the NFL>

The problem is that the NFL hasn't improved its policy too much as far as compensation goes over the course of time. Players back in the 60's and 70's are paid pension, but pension based on what they made as players back in those eras. But the money was absolutely no where near what its worth now and the players from the early era's are paying for it.
Of course there are two sides to every story and its a very interesting article to read. Very unbiased and opinionated.

I just watched a segment of Real Sports where the issue was retirement pay for NFL Players. While the NFL is the lowest of the major sports for retirement pay for it's players, the minimum they stated in the Real Sports piece was $24,000 per year. They did not elaborate beyond the $24,000 being the minimum. Also that $24,000 mentioned was for an older retired player. Since the salaries for the newer player are much higher than even 30 years ago the retirement pay will also be higher but still less than the other major sports. You can bet it will be an issue for the next collective bargaining agreement. That is compared to up to $150,000 per year for MLB and over $100,000 per year for NBA players

Back when a lot of these guys played, they weren't paid as much as these millionaire athletes of today. I wouldn't blame the NFL, but the player's union. A union is supposed to fight for the player, but all the NFLPA does is roll over for the owners.
You're wrong about the $162/month. not ALL players get so little in pension.

Well, that is extremely suspicious, since these guys played when 1.5 million dollars a year was rare. However, you also have to look at how many retired players the NFL has.

maybe these overpaid athletes should be minding out for themselves, there are banks and such in every city in america....none of them have the sense to hire an accountant/whatever to get their financial affairs in order...if i do not start an ira for my retirement no one out there is,so no i do not feel bad at whatever sum the nfl pays them in retirement...after making how much during a playing career most should be able to live off the interest earned instead of spending foolishy....and sorry no athlete is a hero

I'm not sure, but that is very interesting. i will look for that article. that does not sound fair, these men have been our heroes and still remain the best the sports world have to offer and more will eventually wind up here in the highlights.

They probably do deserve money but they really shouldnt care. I mean most of these guys were making a good 100,000 dollars or more for a good few years playing football.

Interesting Question.. needs to be looked into.
Do you remember the figures in the OJ case where they
could`nt touch his NFL pension-Fred Goldman- It seemed
to stick out to me it was near 25,000 per month. not sure
but it was up there.

I agree. The NFL should give the retired players more and show them more respect. They deserve it.

well, i dont think that that is a bad thing at all. they made millions or at least hundreds of thousands while they were playing. if they would have kept the money they made instead of blowing it, then it wouldnt be a problem
