Like in the words bryophyta, or Pterophyta. And why is always used when classifing phylums?

Phyte refers to plants; plantlike
Phyta- Latin variation of phyte
Is it really always used when classifying phylums? Perhaps because the modern classification system is based upon the Latin language; maybe some Greek, also.
