Genre of softcore punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who dont smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar rifts with tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans, itchy scarfs (even in the summer), ripped chucks with favorite bands signature, black square rimmed glasses, and ebony greasy unwashed hair that is required to cover at least 3/5 ths of the face at an angle.

Emo is a genre of music influenced by the post punk/goth rock of the 80's from such bands as The Cure, The Smiths, Love and Rockets and Sisters of Mercy. Many emo bands cite these at major influences.
Emo gets it's name from the emotionally charged lyrics of the songs usually dealing with intense anxiety and alienation or feelings of intense love that usually ends in a bad way or of troubled love.
The best example of emo would probably be an album that predates the emo scene The Cure's Disintegration.

Emo can be used to describe a genre of music. It usually sounds like metal, rock, or alternative. MCR, Fallout Boy, Avenged Sevenfold, and Panic! are mainly classified in this genre.
Emo can also be used to describe a person who wears black, a lot of make-up, or both daily. Many people criticize them of slitting their wrists or taking drugs all of the time. "Emo's" are usually very emotional and shy.

emo is short for emotional...a person who wants to kill themselves and dresses in all black and has hair covering their face is usually like an emo (emotional) person.

well it stands for emotional...but now its kinda developed into some thing else. i guess it means like the sad/depressed emotion. i guess it could also be desribed as like goth but alot less dark.
