Runs fine at speed but does not run fine when idling. OK.
It is not a problem with the fuel filter or pump. If that was the problem, it would get worse going faster, not better. Same with bad gas.
If you had an older car, I would say the spark advance is messed up (Timing problem.) With a 2001, I would suspect the computer is screwing up or a sensor is loose. With the plug in diagnostics, it should not be hard for a good garage to find the problem. I would not ignore it as the problem would get worse or cause other damage and cost more.

It sound like you got bad gas alright. You did the right thing by running it out and add 93 octane. You should had added a can of dry gas to the gas. It drys up the water. When you fill up next add a full can of gas treatment to it. This will re-lube the moving part of your full system and get all the water out of it. The engine light will stay on. Here is how you can turn it off. Take + cable off the battier for five minuted. This reset the computer in your car. If the light stay off you are good to go. If it come back on when the engine gets up to temper. It means there is a hard code set. You will need to have a computer check done. Whether it is on mechanic or by turning the key on and off five time and it in the on position. The light will brink on and off. and give the codes that set. Take it to a mechanic you can trust.

Yes, you probably got some bad gas. Your car is fuel injected so your carb isn't clogged - you don't have a carb. I would replace the gas filter and this should solve your problem. Since your boyfriend obviously can change plugs get him to replace the gas filter for you - He should be able to do this pretty easily. Adding fuel system cleaners to your gas really won't do much good for your problem.

I had this happen to me a couple of times. It sounds like maybe there may be a hole in the vacuum hose that connects to the air conditioner...Sometimes this causes your car to run hot and sputter when it idles and then when you are on the fwy it's fine. After I had the hoses replaced in my car, it was fine.

if it got worse when the plugs were changed then he messed up the plug wires and screwed up the firing order.
Quick cure for bad gas is two cans of dry gas, but only methanol dry gas, not the cheap crap other stuff.
Idle position sensor or like sensor could have coincidentally failed.
Take it to Auto Zone for a free scan.

i own a repair shop, and if the problem started after you bought the gas id think it might be the gas but without being able to see,and hear it run for sure its real hard to say, have him check the gas filter on it,this may be getting stopped up ,that will cause this to happen, and so will the pump, but the filter would be the cheapest thing to try right now on it,and who knows it may fix it,other wise you may have something else going out on it,i hope this help,s.good luck with it.

try going to your local auto parts store and getting some dry gas or water remover that could help maybe even use a fuel system cleaner.

You could have trash in the carb if it is not fuel injected.
The other problem is a vacume leak.
