I am stunned that everyone has listed such innane answers. As a professional historian I cannot think of an event that has changed more people's lives in the 20th century than the invention and development of the computer. News coverage, the space program, transportation, communication, EVERYTHING has been affected by the invention and development of the computer.

The Kennedy assassination? Mafia? Is that previous poster insane?

This is going to sound crazy, but I once had a professor say that the opening of Coney Island is quite possibly the most significant event of the 20th century... and it actually makes a lot of sense when you think about it. When Coney Island opened it completely changed people's way of life. They became "deviant." They could have fun for no particular reason. The rides, attractions and colors that were in the park, all showed the change of the times. This was the first time people went to the beach, ate hot dogs and watched movies. It was a world altering time! Check out the Coney Island website, and if this is more of a long term question for you to answer, PBS released a great documentary on Coney Island that really captures the changing time.

It's not a good one! It's 9/11! We should all be on red alert! Our human to human relationships are in extreme need of repair! We are all misinterpreting one another. Cultures and countries are all non-tolerant of the other. And everyone wants to be king! We're all going to shoot ourselves in the foot if something doesn't change for the better soon! We need to start listening to one another! This is going too far, the killing of innocent bystanders being caught in the crossfire, one too many times! What is our real purpose? How does more killing solve the problems? If it's going to be an eye for an eye, we will certainly accomplish the annhilation of the human race in a very short time. The era of the insects is at hand! They're just waiting to take over, and we're helping by our assinine behaviors in every corner of the globe! Where is our supposed intelligence? Hello, is anybody home?

geez, I hate these kinds of questions, there were many earth-shattering events, 2 world wars, cold war, etc. but there were also major societal changes, sexual revolution in the west, musical changes, as well as major advances in communications technology, especially with the use of radio waves, and now with the advent of the internet, so dude, there was no 'most' event in the 20th century, if it was important enough to be history in the first place it was worth it on a scale from nothing to everything
