I don't think you guys know what socialism is.. One of the answers said look at Russia?.. socialized programs are one of the things that make this country great, education, care for the elderly, Farm.. Medicine ? Most of you seem to confuse Communism and Socialism.. they are totally different, and there can be many varying degree's of either.
Also to all of you that say Socialism fails horribly.. I would tell you to look at the socialist countries in the world and check their crime rates, Murder/Rape.. their homeless rates, unemployment programs, education programs..
I'm an American but I have Traveled to Europe many times... the average European is more evolved than American counterpart... and that has become more so over the last 7-8 years...
and the Dollar compared to the Euro ?

the IDEA of socialism is great. Everyone has everything they need, everyone contributes to the greater good of the whole, it's pretty much a utopia. With that said, a socialist government will never work because people are greedy, lazy, and too many will jump at the chance to take the easy way out and screw that utopia up. So basically, I believe in the idea of socialism, but not the practice of it.

I believe in a lot of what it stands for as an ideal, but like any other "ism," it is dangerous if you commit to it all the way. I prefer to try and learn about "isms," use what's good from them and discard the rest.
For instance, total capitalism would mean roads, hospitals, airport security and even the military would be privately owned. Any public or government ownership is contrary to capitalism, and reeks to some of socialism.
But no one really wants a capitalism or a socialism. We want a balance between all the "isms."

2- An ideal situation for lazy people? Yes. 3-A workable political model? Hell no!

Without socialism their is no such thing as society........What is more important, the importance of the individual or the importance of the society that the individual is a part of? You can't have one without the other.
Edit: sitizen_x is totally correct. You have no idea what socialism is. You live in a socialistic culture unless you are anti-social. Which are you?

yes, I believe that socialism exists. Does it work is another question.
for socialism to work people would have to be willing to work for the collective and not focus on making more money than their neighbors.

It is real, I do not want it here because it tends to fail horribly and miserably. Unfortunately, some people want to establish it here in the US for reasons of which I cannot fathom.
