After leaving Messina in April, then stopping off in Cyprus, Richard came to camp outside Acre. There Richard tried to speak with Saladin, but Saladin sent his brother Saphadin instead. King Philip ordred two assaults on Acre, which were not successful, then a third one which was more successful on July 2. Saladin so far had not sent in his forces, he was waiting for reinforcements to arrive. On July 12, Acre finally surrendered, and agreed to Richard's terms.
The decisive battle, at Arsuf, took place on Sept. 7, 1191. It was a victory for Richard, and Saladin's forces while defeated, did remain intact. Never again would Richard win such a victory over Saladin. Months later, Richard fell ill, agreed to a truce with Saladin, and left the Holy Land forever.
