i received a text message on my phone today from my girlfriend. When i read it though the message seemed odd.It was of a sexually based nature and seemed to be mean't for someone else even though it was sent to my phone, and said it was from her.She said she didnt write it.The message that she actually sent simply said" love you".I didnt beleive her until I checked her phone and confirmed the time on the message that she sent with the message time i received and sure enough she was right. The cell phone company (verizon)said it was possible while unlikely that this could happen because we have not updated our phones and our software wasnt up to date .Is this really possible?

It is cheeky of them to blame your phones!! I've never heard of this happening, but is could be possible - probably a bug in their short message centre software. The problem is definitely not with your phones. It will display whatever it has been sent.
