Everybody is different but when I had mine I did not feel a thing!!They gave me some local freezing first and I didnt evern feel that! You will be in so much pain in your belly you will beg them for the epidural! I was not going to try to be a hero and go with a natural birth,I had every plan on getting that epidural and I was more scared of the needle than I was of giving birth!!Dont worry,it does not hurt!!!

I have had several epidurals and I think the timing also adds to how much pain there is involved. I have had them when I am having such hard contraction and just the sheer thought of having to stay sloped over and completely still when all you want to do is pull you hair out from the pain of contractions makes it more noticeable.
For the most part you will feel a slight stinging from the numbing injection and then what you mostly feel is pressure and some slight pain but nothing to unbearable. I know with the one I had 14 1/2 months ago it was the best of the ones I have had and noticed relief within minutes. I think I was almost in love with the guy who did it. Having the epidural before you are to the point of desperation is also a good thing that way you tend to relax more and handle it better.
I have also had one of my babies completely natural because I take blood thinners while pregnant and they are the kind that it has to be out of your system for 24 hours before they can administer an epidural. I found as long as I stayed on my feet and walking and rocking and lost myself in the sound of the ocean waves on my relaxer music it wasn't to bad. But if you need an epidural by all means do it. It will make you more relaxed, rested and able to concentrate and enjoy the birth than if you are so tired from battling contractions and no rest.
Good luck and congrats
Beth

If you don't deal with pain very well I would not have a natural birth. An epidural will make you feel so much more comfortable.
They will give you a small shot to numb the area before they actually give you the epidural so that you don't feel as much pain. You should just feel some pinching if they administer it correctly.
In about 15 minutes the epidural will kick in and you will feel much more relaxed and the pain can be controlled.
I highly recommend taking birthing classes so that you know what to expect.
Good luck!!

Honey, let me tell you, once you start having labor pains for a while you are going to be so uncomfortably hurting it won't even be funny. They will ask you if you want an epidural. Say yes, it is just alot of pressure in you lower back but it is like a WONDER DRUG once it is done. It stings at first, but once it takes affect you are gonna say it didn't hurt a bit!!! Good Luck!!

I had my daughter 3 weeks ago and I must say that the fear and risks are FAR outweighed by the pain of back labor...once I got the epidural, it was like my soul was given back. I was worried about it before I wemt into labor cause I am petrified of needles...but let me assure you that if I DID feel anything when they poked me I didn't remember it...get the epidural...the guys administering them and the nurses there have done this thousands of times and will be your best friends and help you with any fears you have...

An epidural is like cocaine to a pregnant woman. I've never tried the drug myself but that epidural made me feel as if getting high had nothing on that feeling. It doesn't really hurt because they put it in your back when you're contracting. You may feel it going in but once the medicine hit you girlfriend...........Forget about your boyfriend/husband. Marry the epidural. No prenups. But just know that they only give it to you when you've dilated so much. Good luck and God bless. Congrats on the baby. And you're welcome................

it stings for a sec. but not too bad (i don't do well with pain either). but the epidural should start working real fast and you will forget the pain you were in just as fast. I would definitely get one, i think it makes you more relaxed so you can enjoy your baby's birth. good luck and congrats!
