I just loved him...have not seen a quarterback like him since he retired!

I'm pretty sure he was. 3 MVPs in 4 Super Bowls, and the one time he didnt win MVP of the game, his receiver (Rice) won it. The guy was simply as close to perfect as possible in the biggest games, and was always great in the regular season as well.
He didnt have the arm or legs of studs like Elway or Favre, the zip of Marino or Brady, but he was deadly accurate and always made good decisions.
For me the real sealer was his two aging years in Kansas City. The Niners dumped him (a travesty), and he played two great seasons on mediocre Kansas City teams in the early 1990s.
Montana is surely the greatest of all time, followed by Elway, Staubach, Brady, Marino and Favre (in no particular order)

As someone pointed out earlier, stat-wise Marino held an edge. But let us not forget Superbowl XIX where the much touted (by the media) Dan Marino got seriously thumped 38 - 16. Why? Because he was not nearly as good at Montana under pressure. The more pressure you put on Joe, the better he got. No quarterback I've ever seen (I'm 55) had the presence of mind Joe had. I watched numerous times, while Joe was waiting for a receiver to come open, a defender coming up from behind only to miss the tackle as Joe ducked, darted, or jumped out of a sure tackle. No sir, Tarkenton was close, but no other quarterback was as good as Montana at performing under pressure. When he was playing with Dwight Clark, it was just plain magical. Marino may have had the arm, and he got pretty good toward the end, but he will never approach Montana in my book. Heck, Elway was better than Marino in most respects. I'm not much of a stat man, but I sure like to see winners get er done.

No. I LOVE Joe Montana, and I think he was one of the best of all time, but not number one on my list. The reason is, look at how many passes of 8-10 yards he threw to Jerry Rice that turned into 50yd TD passes. I'm not saying he wouldn't have been successful without Jerry Rice, but I think Jerry made his job much easier.

My top 5 QB's of all time are:
1. Johnny Unitas
2. John Elway
3. Dan Marino
4. Joe Montana
5. Terry Bradshaw
5 (tie) Brett Favre (which kills me because I love the Bears)

Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are also both in the team photo.

I think it is fair to say that he is the 'best' big game QB ever. 4-0 in Superbowls regardless of the quality of his team is worth a lot of respect to me.

I live here in SF and people would get down and suck the guy off just for gracing them with his presence. I absolutely hate that.

I think 'the best' is very subjective. I personally think that Favre or Elway were the best. I just love the way that Favre rolls. He has more heart and guts than Joe does. That's for sure.

Joe Montana certainly was one of the best, but how about
Terry Bradshaw ? he also won 4 Super Bowls. I would say
those two in the more modern era stand out.
Bart Starr, Johnny U , Otto Graham should also be
considered

I think he was the best QB all around. in my book i think he is the Best QB ever to play the game
he didn't have Dan Marino's stats, or John Elway's Arm. but he did what he needed to win games. he did everything needed in order to win. Throw down, throw deep, even a run or two, and he never lost his cool...he just concentrated on the game. he doesn't need the strongest arm, he just needed to keep his head in the game and just do what he needs to do, and that is what made him so great.

my point: is in Super Bowl XXIII he made a 92 yard drive to win the game. not only that but in the red zone he almost threw a INT. any QB would have been nervous then, but not Montana. his next throw was incredibly accurate, right in stride and in between 3 defenders, to Rice for a TD to win the game. any other QB would be afraid to make a risky throw after what just happened, but not Montana.

Not the best but one of the best. He won quite a few big game by being very lucky. He never meant to complete "the catch" he was just trying to throw it away so he wouldn't get crushed. The Niners would have never gone anywhere if it weren't for that game.

There were a few good ones before him too.
