A crib, a dresser, a changing table, and a rocking chair, for starters. The furniture is the foundation. Oh, and a carseat. (Safety first!)
Gotta feed the baby! For formula fed babies- bottles, nipples, and a bottles brush. (I personally recommend Gerber Comfort-grip bottles and comfort-latch nipples.) A bottle warmer also comes in handy if you make some formula ahead of tim & store it in the fridge.
Breast-fed babies: mom needs nursing bras, nursing pads, and I REALLY recommend investing in a Boppy pillow. Also a breast pump (the type depends on how often she will be using it), milk storage bags, and again bottles, nipples, & a brush for cleaning. And all babies are going to need burp cloths!
Diapers and wipes!! A wipes warmer is a nice convenience, but not necessary.
Then clothes. The best recommendations are onesies (lots and lots of them), sleep'n'plays (also called layettes- basically feetie pajamas), and blanket sleepers (in feetie or sack-type versions).
That covers the bare basics, but there are many other items i found useful: a baby carrier or sling, a bouncy chair, a swing, and a toybox. (Trust me, if you have relatives, the baby WILL be getting toys.) A pack-and-play and obviously a diaper bag is essential for travel. Soothing CDs. A CAMERA!! Digital is best, allowing you to preview the pics. Also, pacifiers (if you're not opposed to them), baby washcloths & hooded towels, a baby tub, baby wash, lots of blankets, in all shapes and sizes. And if possible, acquire a travel system (a stroller & infant carseat combo). That way, when they outgrow the infant careseat, you need only to make one more purachase of a combo toddler/booster seat.

Here was my list:
-- bright, age appropriate toys to develop your baby's mind and
sense of play
-- bedtime needs
-- a safe place to sleep, like a crib or cradle
-- blankets (no pillows, though!)
-- waterproof mattress cover(s)
-- food needs (if required; remember to sterilize!)
-- bottles (ones that vent will prevent a lot of colic, gas, and
crying)
-- age appropriate nipples for the bottles
-- a healthy formula (many have omega fatty acids in them
now, but they are more expensive. Get the best you can
afford)
-- diaper needs
-- diapers
-- wipes
-- rash cream
-- baby powder
-- a federally approved car seat
-- bath and toiletry needs
-- tear free soap
-- nail clippers
-- lotion for dry newborn skin
-- cotton swabs for cleaning umbilical stumps
-- medical needs
-- a digital or rectal thermometer (make sure you know how
to use it properly)
-- Baby aspirin or Tempra to bring down any kind of fever
--clothing needs
-- a chest of drawers or a closet to store clothes
-- diaper shirts or "onesies" that won't untuck from their
pants
-- sleepers appropriate for the weather
-- hats (new babies should have their heads covered when
they're outside, at least at first)
-- weather appropriate outerwear
-- day-to-day clothes, like shirts and pants, or dresses
-- socks to keep little feet warm
That's really the bare essentials. Other things you buy that may seem essential to others may not be as essential to you, depending on your budget. Those might include:
-- a stroller or carriage
-- mobiles for a crib
-- a play yard
-- change table
-- baby sling or Snugli baby carrier
You know, stuff like that.
Best of luck to you!
