Good question. GSM is an international standard and there are more than a billion GSM handsets out there. This drives down the cost and increases the sophistication and choice of handsets. Also network equipment is cheaper because there are more vendors, scale and competition. There is more R&D going into GSM.

CDMA is largely USA only. You can't take a CDMA handset overseas.

You also need to look into coverage in your area and call costs etc. That should influence your decision to buy.
