I had a landscaper come to my home and provide a bid and his license # is on his card. Is this a contactors license or is there another type of licensing board for landscapers? What sources should I check the license against?

Go to California State web site, check state contractor licence board. Punch up the name of the contractor, this will tell you if his licence is current but it will not say if he has any complaints or not. BBB will have that stuff..........

You can check all California contractor's licenses at cslb.ca.gov (Contractor's State Licensing Board)
It will give status of the license plus any information regarding complaints.
