Mudstones are very fine-grained sedimentary rocks consisting of silts and clays. Clay minerals (phyllosilicates) are the largest constituent. Primarily kaolinite, montmorillonite, chlorite, serpentine and illite. Very fine grained (silt and clay sized) quartz and feldspar and other minor minerals are also found. The term mudstone really refers to the size of the grains in the rock rather than to a particular mineralogic content.
