what is my next step?

Question

ok, so my husband and i have agreed that we need to separate, and ultimately - get a divorce. but i'm at a loss, b/c i don't know what to do next...do i contact a lawyer? file paperwork?

if this helps or makes a difference:
-we have 1 son, 18 months
-i live in NC, and he lives in VA,been that way since September
-i stay at home with our son, and he supported us financially
