The advantages to bilingual education are quite obvious; a multilingual person is much more marketable, culturally sensitive, and socially adaptable. I see it as analogous to having more than one talent. The only disadvantage of bilingual education is an ineffective program. Just like in Math, English, Social Science, etc., a bad program will give negative results. It's not bilingual education that's bad, it's the bad program that makes it ineffective. For example, I have seen "bilingual" classrooms where only Spanish is spoken. That defeats the purpose, and gives bilingual education a bad name.

Frankly, I do not find any disadvantages on learning two languages. In fact, bilingual education is very essential in today's world. It opens more opportunities for a diversity of people troughout their lives. It is an advantage to start a bilingual education early on, so that one can adjust to both languages, becoming comfortable and fluent in both.

The more language you master, the better it is for you.
Imagine: you speak English, French and Spanish, whenever you find a magazine, book in those 3 languages, you can read all of them. So you get more information than those who only speak one language.. Bilingual or multilingual people can travel anywhere they want, they have more self confidence they are not afraid to have language barrier. if they need help and they come across somebody who don't speak their language, they can ask this person in his language.

If you look for job, sometimes they prefer or require bilingual people.

There is no disadvantage, only advantages

The effectiveness of bilingual education depends on the quality of the school, teacher and the curriculum. If it is effective, bilingual education is very advantageous. If not, the student may be weak in one or both of the languages.

Most naysayers of bilingual education claim that students non-native English speakers will never learn English if allowed to fall back on their native language. This is probably true of bilingual education carried out poorly.

Even if bilingual education is carried out well, it may, in fact, turn out that students are unable to express themselves fully on some topics in their native language. For example, my husband, after 15 years (elementary through university) in bilingual schools, has difficulty reading about or discussing advanced mathematics or scientific matters in Spanish, but does fine in English.

There is some talk of a new fluency in English alienating bilingual students from their non-English speaking families and their roots, but from what I have read in my preparation before and after becoming a teacher this "alienation" is mainly subconscious.

i don't think there is a disadvantage of being bilingual....
I'm bilingual and it only gives advantages,{ Spanish (i learned first) and then English} ... I read some of the comments people had put and it is true that you can mix up word in Spanish with English but that means that you are not bilingual.... bilingual is that you speak 2 languages fluently.. if you mix up the words your not fluent .....
I am now trying to learn a complete different language [different from Spanish and English] Japanese.. ...
The more languages you know the better.... if gives you more jobs opportunities . here in US or in different countries (that depends of the languages you speak)

I know of 2 disadvantages of bilingual education.
1. There are not enough qualified teachers that are truly bilingual to run an effective program in most areas.
2. Not enough money allocated to run an effective program in most areas.

The education system is the biggest problem. I grew up with serious educational problems because the schools and staff are not equipped with the training to ensure the student gets a solid grasp of the fundamentals of one language at a time let alone two. Schools, almost by nature are set to one language and almost act in a competitive nature towards other languages. To this day my grammar and spelling is blended between languages.

The is no disadvantages of billingual education, even for the most confusing language. It should start at preschool, 3 to 6 is where language most develops, in this period they should start learning a new language. As well as doing schoolwork in billngual schools, you should borrow books and videos in both languages. This will support or build on what your child has learn in school.
