I highly recommend studying aboard. You can take classes in a foreign language, classes for your major that are taught in English, or even general education classes. I did a short-term program through my university in Spain. It was for a month during the summer, and it was general education class that was taught in English. It was a great experience because you are exposed to an entirely different culture.

I had taken some Spanish in High School so that helped, but I would recommend learning the basic words and phrases of the local language. Also I would recommend visiting places while you are abroad not just the tourist attractions but also the local towns. When I was in Spain we stayed in a small city that had siesta, at 2 pm everything shut down and people went home to eat lunch. It was quite unique. Bigger cities that attract foreign visitors may not keep culture customs such as siesta. Also try the local food, even if you are unsure what is in it.

There may be times when you will get homesick and miss familiar foods, people, and places. And there may be times you might dislike something, but when you look back on it years later, you will be so glad you went abroad.

Studying abroad opens your eyes to how others live. I know that sounds like a cliche but it's true. Also as an American it lets you have a perspective of how our culture is different. There is something nice and relaxing about not working in the afternoon and eating outside.

You can also apply for scholarships and financial aid to help go abroad. They may only pay for tuition and room and board but it does make a difference. Your school should have a list of programs and also check out programs at neighboring universities.

One more thing to consider: usually the class takes you on field trips to places that you may not normally see if you went on vacation. And if there is something you want to see, you can go on the weekend!

Hope this helps.
