People have told me that those that go into this field are themselves, really screwed up. They can help themselves and others because they understand-that is good. They can over-analyze even simple situations-that is bad, but not really irredeemable. Risks of burning out are magnified by years put in and types of clients seen. Pay is great but so is the stress.

You're drawn to it, because you begin to learn about the subject and you don't want to stop. You ace your classes and read extra on the side, and don't even think about it. You have a 4.0 undergraduate GPA, because you will need it to get into grad school (for your Ph.D.) and not have $150,000 in student loans to pay off. Being a psychologist can pay okay, but it's not a guarantee by any means. You will have to go through psychotherapy yourself and face your own demons. You can put your own problems aside in order to devote yourself to another person's, but you don't forget your own, you get back to them. You have a high tolerance for crazy people, and half the ones you meet will be your colleagues. You don't mind being poor through grad school (unless you're already independently wealthy). Good luck.
