An exquisite story about love lost due to the influence of people who persuaded her against someone she loved. It is only as she comes into her own that she realizes her continuing feelings for Captain Wentworth and she does not want to lose him again - she puts herself in his way to win his attention again. It speaks so directly to those who do not trust themselves to make choices and allow others to have power over them. It tells how life experiences can bring growth. And it tells about how love doesn't die.

I enjoyed Persuasion, although it isn't my favorite Austen novel. It was the last novel that she wrote, and it was published after her death.

It is called Persuasion because Anne was persuaded away from Captain Wentworth when she was younger, but then realizes that she really did love him and should not have listened to the advice that led her to turn him down. However, it was not Austen who titled the book, so she might have named it differently.

The title refers to the persuasion to which the heroine, Anne Elliot, has given in, to her later regret. Several other characters find themselves being persuaded or refusing to be persuaded, as well. One shouldn't read too much into the title, which was not the choice of the author, but was given to the book after her death. The book is a study of the artificiality of the class system and the father and elder sister of the heroine are caricatures of all that is most arrogant and conceited in the aristocracy of the time. The central message is that when one is too prone to let the head rule the heart, happiness is not always the result. When Anne Elliot listens to the counsel of her humble friend, Mrs Clay, and to the counsel of her own heart, she finds wisdom and happiness after so many years of loneliness and dissatisfaction. It's a truly marvellous book.
