The book I'm reading is fairly vague, simply says to "pull to the side" whatever that means.

You put your finger on the string and "pull" it down ONE TIME and let it go again. You don't have to necessarily pluck it with the pick. However, you can use the pick, too. I hope I'm not confusing you. Try this:

1. Fretting hand on specific fret
2. Pick hand (pick or finger) goes two or three frets up or over the pickups
3. Pick hand pulls/plucks string
4. Fretting hand bends string and then releases
5. When you release the string it will pop back into place and you'll hear the note you wanted.

You've just completed a pull off. It's basically striking the string your holding, bending it quickly with your fret hand and then releasing it. You do not have to "repick it".

Good luck.
