I have a great idea for a video game but i have no idea how to get started. Any suggestions?

Start by creating a design document. This is an outline of all the aspects of your game, like the rules, locations, stories, characters and any other special features. Good design docs are pretty long and detailed. Sketches of what your game will look like are a good thing to add.
Then if you want to take it a step further you can download something like Gamemaker or RPG maker for free, or purchase a 3D game maker like Dark Basic (not cheap, unfortunately). Learn to use the program and practice by making little games first before you start on your main game idea. It would also be a good idea to learn a programming language like C++.
The next step, actually creating the game, is the hardest to follow through on. This is because many people lose interest or find they soon no longer have the time to make the game. This is why working with a team made of your friends is necessary so you all can motivate each other. Games are rarely made by just one person any more!

The XBOX 360 just came out with a great program to accomplish your dream. Build the game on your pc and transfer it to XBOX Live for others to see.

compile all your ideas. get proof that you thought of it such as pictures, videos, etc. of you with the ideas somehow. pick a game system you think is best for it or u want to support. go to a game company such as bungee, konami, etc. submit ur work. long way: go through video game design college and get a designing software on ur computer.
