How else would 1 person be able to drive a vehicle and be able to load mail into the box? In America, we drive on the right side of the street, and all the mailboxes are on the shoulder, not in the middle of the road. The alternative would be for a standard drive vehicle to constantly be on the wrong side of the road...sounds like the approach Home Depot managers would take.

Wow! Thnx for asking this question as I have always wondered this too. My hunch is that they did it for safety in the sense that the mail carriers do alot of getting in and out of the cars. By putting the steering wheel on the right side (british) but still adhering to driving ont the right side of the road (american) it ensures that the driver/mail carrier always exits away from traffic/the road when getting off and never has to cross into a road when getting on. So, my hunch is safety. What's the real answer?! LOL

So they can pull right up to the mail box or side walk and not open and shut the door on the street side where they could get hit. if it is rural delivery it is so they are on the same side of the road with the mail box. They would have to stretch and reach over the passenger seat otherwise.

So that while the mail car is moving in the correct lane of traffic the driver (mail man) can easily reach your mail box
