I agree that English isn't the only important language but it's easier to communicate in English because it is considered a Universal language. There are still some who can speak Spanish here. There is also a "modified version" which we call Chabacano which is still spoken in some areas in the Philippines like Zamboanga and i think some parts of Cavite. When I was in high school i used to pick up some test papers in Spanish from college students who used our classroom. I'd love to learn that language but it's no longer being taught when I entered the university. I dont know the reasons behind it. Though I think it's really more practical to study English because we can put what we learn into practice. For example, when we watch American TV shows, or work for foreign firms... and not to mention participate in online forums, discussion boards and of, course Y!A And for your information, the Spanish people who run the Philippines from 16th to the end of 19th century did not really teach Filipinos the Spanish language on purpose so only the few well educated people at that time knows the language. But we have many borrowed words.

I would assume English areas that have a Spanish influence would be in the Southwest, (Mexicans), Spanish Harlem in NYC (Puerto Ricans), and Miami (Cubans).
Generally, the "Spanish influenced" areas aren't doing so hot economically.
