I've had patients walk around at 4-5 cm for a week or two. Hopefully, that won't be the case for you! Get working on the SEX to get things going! (or maybe a little nipple stimuation).

If you're contracting regularly, 4 cm is usually the start of "active labor" but many women sit at 4 cm or heck, I even read of a woman going to the hospital to be induced. She was dilated to 9!!
You have less than a month to go. ;)

have your waters broken? have you started having contractions? technically, you aren't in labour as yet. i was 41 weeks pregnant and was 4cm dilated but wasn't in labour until they broke my waters.
i would call the hospital though. they will probably ask you about your waters and contractions and if either has/is occurring, will tell you to come in (if waters have broken) or to time your contractions.

Well it could be very quick or it could take awhile. Once I hit 4cm it was only a few hours until I was holding my baby ... and he was my third. Anyhow ... good luck and early congrats :)

sorry, no definite answer, but should be within the next two weeks. however, if your obgyn told you that from a rough check with his/her fingers, it could be tonight. that's what happened to me and it is apparently pretty common to go soon after a check-up like that.
