How to read √2 and the action of calculating √2 in English?

√2 is read "The square root of 2". The action of calculating its value would be called "Taking the square root of 2".

We read that "the square root of 2". To calculate it, we're looking for a number that when we multiply it by itself we get 2. It's not going to be an integer, but we know that it will be between 1 (because 1*1 is 1) and 2 (because 2*2 is 4). Most calculators have a square root key that can estimate.
