You need to look at other cities rather then Tampa....

You could stay at the Sailport inn or Radisson Bay Harbour that are actually in Tampa and are on Tampa Bay.... there isnt a real beach right where they are but a short walk would get you to one... the beaches there aren't really memorable to be honest...

Best to look at St Petersburg Beach, Treasure Island, Indian Rocks Beach, Sand Key, or Clearwater Beach if you want to be close to Tampa and stay on the Beach.

If you dont mind being further away from Tampa.... Sarasota...Ana Maria Island, Longboat Key, and Siesta Key are all fantastic beaches that are about 1 hour from Tampa.
Siesta Key is often rated one of the top beaches in the US (including Hawaii) beause of the powderwhite sand beaches.

Further South, Ft Myers beach, Sanibel, and Captia Islands are some of the greatest shelling beaches anywhere will extraordinary blue water.

St. Pete or Clearwater Beach are very nice. Tampa is on Tampa Bay so although there are hotels on the water it is not the beach. USe Yahoo Travel to check the area out.

If you want to go to beaches in the area, you will have to go to St.Petersburg, or Treasure Island (across the causeway).

Don't sleep on the beach. A lot of homos on that side.
