It is suppose to get all your ideas on paper so you can organize your paper.
Personally, I write the essay and THEN do the cluster mapping. I never could work the way teachers expected. My opening paragraph was always the last thing I did because I had to see where the paper went to know how to open it... Oh, well, I made A's. That's all that mattered. Teachers are too set on a standard form and do not take into account that students function differently.

Honestly I think it's the best way to help you realize or outline a paper. Come up with idea, branch on ideas, and each branch has it's branches. Main circle, pgph one. First branches, pgph 2-? and in these paragraphs are sentences from the branchs underneath each subject per paragraph.

It helps you see how all the information connects back on itself. This allows you to see what you know the most about and how the information flows around.
